Preserving Nature’s Gem: Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park

Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park is one of the remaining large-scale lowland rainforests in the Philippines, home to various endemic flora and fauna that can be only found in the Panay Islands.

It still harbors a significant stand of lowlands primary rainforest and is the last contiguous lowland forest in the Western Visayas (PhilinCon).

The Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park was proclaimed a natural park by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on 18 April 2002. It has an area of 120.09 km2, found within the municipalities of Nabas, Malay, Buruanga, Libertad, and Pandan (Northwest Panay Peninsula NP, Philippines).

Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park is a valued watershed in the Panay Islands. Through its forest, the rainwater is channeled into a network of springs and rivers that supply water to over 100,000 people. According to Our Fragile Earth the Northwest Panay watershed also provides water to Boracay Island and the hundreds of thousands of visitors that visit there each year. It is vitally important to its surrounding communities for it provides the water supply, livelihood, and protection to people from natural disasters.

The Northwest Panay Peninsula consists of forests, waterfalls, rivers, mountains, and caves that provide life to multiple living systems. It houses multiple species that are proudly native to the region.

The Local Government Units of Aklan and Antique have made alliances to address sustainable management and protection of the natural resources of the peninsula. They are the Northwestern Aklan Coastal Area Development Alliance (NACADA), LIPASECU (Libertad, Pandan, Sebaste, and Culasi Bay-wide Management Council), and the NPPBMC. Their objectives are 1) to provide the LGU Alliances with tools to strengthen their collective capacities for effective and efficient management of their coastal and terrestrial resources and, 2) to provide a venue for greater community participation in natural resource profiling, services (Northwest Panay Peninsula NP, Philippines).

However,

There are still continuous local tree-cutting and lash-and-burn farming activities that are unchecked. According to PhilinCon, crucial areas of the peninsula have been substantially depleted and are in desperate need of regeneration. There is also an ongoing over-exploitation of lumber resources, conversion of forest lands to agricultural lands, cuttings, girdling, and illegal hunting activities by outsiders. A recent report of the possible inclusion of the Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park in a hydropower project in Malay, Aklan, came out and brought concern to nearby communities and conservationists.

What can they do?

The active participation of LGUs in both the province of Aklan and Antique can use this opportunity to give livelihood to their communities and encourage them to engage in sustaining and protecting the peninsula. Over-exploitation and illegal activities can be stopped once the people are provided with steady livelihoods. This can start by introducing the communities to forest farming, using abundant natural resources for livelihood, and by possibly making the natural park an ecotourism attraction. Together with this, the LGUs will be able to educate the communities for them to be actively involved in effectively managing the resources since sustaining the protected area needs a collective effort.

Blog#4: Mobile Apps

A phone would be useless without mobile applications. These apps bring life to every phone user and make the phone more helpful than the main purpose, which is for communication. Different apps transform the phone into a more useful instrument ( it can be a book, an iPod, a dictionary, etc.) and make our lives convenient. Mobile apps are efficient in a way that many can be stored in just a single phone so it can benefit the users in many ways.

I have downloaded a lot of mobile applications and I definitely have many favorites but I will share with you three mobile apps that helped me a lot.

1. Youtube

Youtube is one of the most well-known mobile apps and it has a large number of users. This video streaming app lets you share your videos and at the same time, you can also watch videos uploaded by other users. It contains a variety of videos that includes documentaries, movies, short films, music videos, shows and many more. You can also browse your subscriptions, your playlist and keep up with your preferred channels.

When you open the app it shows you mixed videos from your subscriptions and youtube recommendations based on what you liked, your watching pattern or just random stuff. The search button is located on the upper portion where you input the titles or keywords of what you want to view. There is also a menu button that can lead you to your account and lets you manage it. The discovery button contains varied videos and large categories that will let you discover new videos and channels. If you find a video favorable you can click the like button or if you want more of the video or more from the channels you can click subscribe so that you can keep track of the channel.

I am very fond of Youtube because I use this app to listen to music. It helps me discover newly released songs and songs that are related to what I like. I also discover new artists and Youtube gives a chance to get to know them more if they have a Youtube channel. The reason why I like Youtube the most (compared to other video streaming app) is because it is free. You can acquire it and enjoy all of the features without paying anything. You just download it from the AppStore and then you can use it.

2. Piano Tiles

Piano Tiles is a very simple game but is also highly addictive. The mechanics are simple, you are given a list of musical piece being played in the piano and you just have to click the black tiles according to the note, but one thing is very important, don’t tap the white tiles. It has topped the App store chart and I see two reasons why, it is easy to learn and it is also very relaxing (thanks to the classical music).

The game has also different levels. The first round is slow, it mimics that original speed of the song but as you finish the song it will then turn to a race until you can never keep up with it. You can also collect stars and points to unlock other songs. It has also features that will let you play with other players internationally where all of you get ranked after playing.

My most favorite feature of Piano Tiles is it contains different classic songs that I know and introduced me to new songs. Listening to the music is relaxing and it made me appreciate music of the past. I love how challenging the game is and how it gives you a lot of bonus after winning one round. It satisfies me and at the same time, it frustrates me also.

3. Google Maps

Google Maps is a web mapping application that is created by google. It is a very useful app most especially when you are new to a place or you don’t know how to arrive at your destination. Because of the upgraded features it was considered more like a lifestyle app rather than just a utility app. Google maps is an easy to use app and it also provides almost complete information. From the directions, to the transportation, the time and the popular spots in the area. You can just input your current location, sometimes the phone does it for you, search your destination and then it gives you the necessary information.

What I like about it the most is that it is free to download. The google maps also act like a tracking device that tracks your movement and guides you until you arrive at your destination. You can also search for restaurants, malls, and hotels in the area through this app. And lastly its latest update also lets the google to book a ride for you and you can do it without typing.

These three mobile apps are my favorites in video streaming, gaming, and lifestyle. They have played a big part in my life and these apps helped me a lot. But I won’t limit myself to these apps. As it updates and becomes better, there also new apps that I can use instead of these apps and I want to explore more apps. These apps may be good but who knows maybe there are still better apps.

Blog#3: Charging or Stealing?

Public charging stations are very common nowadays, in schools, ports, terminals, and even stores have charging stations and people, without knowing the risk of using public USB charging stations continue to patronize the availability of these things. Honestly, I never have tried using a public charging kiosk because aside from it being costly, I always doubted the safety of plugging in some random USB on my phone and since the cable that we use to recharge our battery is the same cable that enables us to sync data.

It is my first time hearing the word juice jacking, and it sounded serious. Well, it as something to do with stealing information so it must be serious. Identity theft is something my non-techy grandmother would always warn me about and who would have thought that by just simply charging my phone in a public charging station can possibly bring me this kind of danger?

People should be aware of the danger of using public charging stations, but it would be a little bit hard to spread awareness because – One, people love anything convenient. Two, warning them through a blog post or just some articles will not catch their interest. Lastly, you cannot just put warning signs in a public charging station since it is business and if warning signs were written, people will not charge in a kiosk. But on the bright side, warnings about such dangers can be translated to infographics or posters that can be posted publicly anywhere, since people love to read randomly whenever there is something posted.

The posters/infographic can include precautions and tips on how to reduce the possibility of juice jacking. Power banks are popular these days and I think owning one is probably one big step in to prevent juice jacking to happen. It is also a hundred times better than charging stations because you own it, some power banks can actually be just placed in your pocket, it is convenient, and you don’t have to pay for every hour or minutes of use.

In situations where charging is really needed, public charging stations are undeniably helpful, but we should always bear in mind that we should be careful in leaving footprints of our identity because that information is not just money or simple things, it is us and we wouldn’t want it to be stolen.

DATA-based life #alwaysconnected

“We are all connected by the Internet, like neurons in a giant brain.”
– Stephen Hawking

When you open your mobile phones what do you first do? Some people loves talking to Siri first, some loves to open the camera and check the current condition of their look and others simply check if they have messages from friends or maybe from a special someone. Well me? What I do is: first, type my passcode to unlock my phone then second, I activate the cellular data. After that, I check the long list of apps that I am logged in. I check the chats on messenger, how many hearts to I get on my new instagram post, retweets and favorites on twitter, browse memes and other stuff on facebook, tune in to new videos in youtube and more activities that engages me in the social world and keeps me busy. But then I can’t do all those if I don’t have load to activate my cellular data. So if these activities keeps me alive then I should keep my cellular data alive – even if it makes my wallet dead.

My mom would once rant about how I spend my money on unnecessary things that only feeds my ego but surprisingly she also became part of the online community who spends a lot just to keep their “data” alive. It seems like everybody is doing it, whenever I walk on the streets people just keep on looking at their phones, even when I’m on a jeepney some people would actually watch youtube or browse facebook during the whole ride so if I’m not being like them, it would really feel awkward looking at them until I get home. So sometimes I feel the need to have internet on my phone so I won’t have the awkward moments, to be entertained, to connect or just to fit in.

There was a time when we had a family trip to Boracay. I didn’t have internet on phone because I’m saving my money for souvenirs and other important stuff. So I decided to just let it, enjoy the view and make most of the moments. I did, actually we had a lot of fun, and I was fine with just taking beautiful pictures and chatting to everyone until the night came and I felt the urgent need to share the refreshing view and the wonderful moments to everyone. It was actually the Instagram’s fault — partly. If instagram story wasn’t a trend I would not be influenced by it and I would have finished my day “data” free. But then I just can’t, sharing those photos feels fun, it made me feel connected in the world outside the island and I was happy with that. The same day I realized that having data became one of my needs.

But then data isn’t as unnecessary as how my mom would describe it to me, actually it connects me to my family, who now lives far away from me, my friends, classmates and teachers. My internet usage is now not limited for entertainment purposes only because all the important information, readings, and homeworks can only be accessible if I have data, and it is enough reason to make me anxious if I don’t turn on my cellular data even just for a day.

It is good thing to be connected to people whenever and wherever you are. That is one advantage of having internet since it makes a lot of things easier for us. But we also have to remember that internet does not always entertain you or make you happy. Online friendships and active chats does not always make you feel connected. My morning routine of opening my phone after I wake up and closing my phone before I sleep does not really complete my day.  What’s better than having a “data” based life is having real people to chat with, having a real view to appreciate, sharing stories face to face, seeing how people react on you in person, and experiencing life outside the screens of your mobile phones.
